According to Aristotle, an important aspect of a good plot
is peripeteia, or the direction of the action suddenly turning
into the opposite direction. This is accompanied by a strong
emotional charge.
This kind of turning point is, for example, the scene in "The
Patriot", where an officer of the British colonial army
William Tavington (Jason Isaacs) shoots the protagonist Benjamin
Martin's (Mel Gibson) young son. This event changes
a pacifist and a father of a family into a ruthless and effective
freedom fighter.
Important turning points are usually placed into the end of acts
and into the midpoint
of the real time duration of the film.
