The boom operator is the sound designer's (soundman's) assistant
who directs the microphone, which is attached to the end of
a boom so that the actor's speech and the sounds coming from
his or her breathing and clothes can be recorded during the
shooting.
The boom operator assists the sound
designer (soundman) making sure the microphone picks the
sound in
the film (or video). The job requires precision, since the
microphone is directed with the boom to the very limit of
framing
in order to get the sound as well as possible.
The boom operator also takes care of the sound recording systems,
microphones and tapes together with the soundman.
Cf. Second soundman, sound assistant.
